South Luangwa National Park – A wildlife photographer’s guide

On a walking safari or game drives, you’ll get three whole days to discover South Luangwa National Park. Each day will start with a hearty breakfast, then you’ll have the option to go on a walking safari or a game drive safari. After your morning adventure, you’ll head back to camp for lunch and some downtime.

The afternoon/evening game drive will start with afternoon game watching and then switch to a night safari using spotlights to find nocturnal creatures after dark. Afternoon tea will be served.

Once you get back to the camp, you’ll be right on schedule for dinner and then you can go to bed whenever you like.

Day 5: Game Drive transfer from South Luangwa

After a hearty breakfast, your Luambe Camp Guide/Drive will be waiting for you at Flatdogs to start the adventure to Luambe National Park. The four hours of driving time will allow you to fully appreciate the diverse landscapes, exotic animals, and breathtaking avian life you will encounter.

Thereafter, you will have the opportunity to relax and savor the feeling of being closer to nature after checking in and having lunch served. As a prelude to a safari activity in the late afternoon or early evening, we’ll have tea or coffee. Then, we’ll head back to camp, just in time for dinner and a later bedtime.

Days 6-8: Explore Luambe National Park

Discover Luambe National Park

Here is a rundown of everything you can do while you’re here at the magnificent Luambe National Park, and this is your perfect chance to discover it:

Morning (5:00 am – 9:30 am):
While having a quick coffee and biscuits, you may listen to the grunts of hippos and a variety of birdcalls as you welcome the new day in the picturesque Luangwa Valley. Then, if you have access to a ZCP or Luambe guide, you should definitely go on a mammal monitoring drive first thing in the morning. Coffee with the carmine bee-eaters, anti-poaching treks, or checking the night’s activity on the camera trap circuit are all wonderful morning activities.

Midday Siesta (11 am – 2 pm):
Let yourself unwind now! Relax in your tent or find a shady area with binoculars to see the wildlife. Alternatively, you can join our team in the main area to go deeper into the project’s history, review the footage captured by the camera traps, or revise the leopard family tree. In the late afternoon, you will go on a game drive after enjoying a delicious meal at the camp.

Late afternoon / early evening (3 pm – 8 pm):
Late afternoons are perfect for a stroll along the Luangwa River while you listen to the hippos, followed by sundowners. Alternatively, you may visit Chitingulu village to gain insight into the lives of the locals who live near national parks. As the sun goes down over the river, you may kick back in camp with a sundowner and listen to the hippo antics. Then, in the dining room, you’ll have a three-course supper. Those interested in the smaller, more peculiar species of Luambe might take advantage of the opportunity to listen and record the bat activity in camp after dinner.

Day 9: Transfer to Mfuwe Airport / Local Flight

Before you leave the camp, you will have breakfast. Then, you will be taken to Mfuwe Airport for a local flight to Lusaka, where you can connect with your aircraft back home.

Our representative will be there to receive you at Lusaka International Airport and help you check in for your departing aircraft.
