Gorilla Habituation Experience
Bwindi forest is the only place in Africa where one can have a Gorilla Habituation Experience. There isn’t a specific definition of Gorilla Habituation Experience Safaris. However, it can literally be explained as a process of training wild Mountain Gorillas to get used to the presence of human beings.
The process involves a team of individuals like trackers, researchers, conservationists and rangers who take 2-3 years to have a group of Mountain Gorillas fully habituated. During the process, the team visits these wild Gorillas each day and each individual Gorilla is given a name.
After the wild Gorilla Habituation process the group is put through a mock exercise where a few people visit the Gorillas. If the group passes the mock exercise by portraying what is expected of fully habituated gorillas, then they are opened for Gorilla trekking Holidays.
Unlike Gorilla trekking where a total of 8 people trek a single family, only 4 persons can go for Gorilla Habituation a day. This makes it necessary to do permit bookings as early as possible; at least 6 months prior.
A maximum of 4 hours spent in the presence of the Mountain Gorillas during Habituation. This means more time with the Gorillas than trekking that offers maximum 1 hour. During this process, individuals get to know much more about Mountain Gorillas, behaviors and a lot about their lifestyle.
Two (2) Gorilla families in Bwindi forest have been set aside for Habituation Experiences. Bikyingi Gorilla family in Rushaga sector is one of the families available for Gorilla Habituation. The group has 1 silver back, 9 adults and 9 infant Gorillas.
Bushasho Gorilla family is the other group that is set aside for habituation still within Rushaga sector.
