A gorilla trek is one of the most thrilling adventure vacations you can give yourself! If you’re reading this, you’re probably committed to making it happen. Hooray! But when should I leave? Permits for gorillas can be purchased for any month. However, other months provide superior conditions. So, let’s go over the considerations to consider while determining whether to go gorilla trekking…

The Mountain Gorillas

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda can be done year-round

In Uganda, you may go gorilla trekking at any time of year. Uganda has a tropical climate with daily average temperatures ranging from 25 to 29 degrees Celsius (77 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit). There’s also a lot of humidity.

Mountain gorillas, on the other hand, are only found in two parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park, both of which are located in the hilly region of southwest Uganda. Because the heights are higher than the national average, average temperatures range from 7°C (45°F) at night to 20°C (68°F) during the day.

Because the mountain gorilla area is in the southern hemisphere, the coldest months are June and July.

Winter in Uganda occurs in the middle of the year, so if you don’t enjoy the cold, avoid June and July. However, if you opt to go gorilla trekking, you should be prepared for a chilly start (and come prepared, as we discuss in What to pack for gorilla trekking).

Two rainy seasons

Uganda, like most East African countries, has two rainy seasons:

  • The extended rains that persist from the end of February to the end of May
  • The brief rains that occur from October to mid-December

During these times, tropical downpours are common. While they don’t last long, the downpours make for very muddy and slippery hiking conditions. As a result, most people prefer to avoid the rainy season.

Best months for gorilla trekking

Plan your gorilla trek between June and September, or between mid-December and mid-February, to escape the rains.

The long dry season, from June to September, and the short dry season, from mid-December to early February, are the finest times to undertake gorilla trekking in Uganda. Because Uganda has a tropical climate, there may still be a few showers, but the ground is normally dry, making it less slippery.

A good time for other Adventures

The dry season is also the best time to go on a safari in Uganda because the bush is less dense, making it easier to view wildlife. The dry season is also the optimum time to go chimp trekking or Nile white-water rafting. More information may be found in Top 20 Things to Do in Uganda.

Seasonal rates

During the rainy season, lodges in the area charge reduced prices. At this time of year, the Uganda Wildlife Authority may also provide cheap gorilla permits. The rainy – or low – seasons are thus ideal for more cheap gorilla trekking. You might be interested in learning more about Uganda accommodation.
