Detailed Namibia vs Botswana Self Drive Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Windhoek
Distance approx. 50 km; driving time approx. 1 hour
Take care of your arrival at Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport before picking up your rental car. After you have gathered all of your belongings, you can drive to your lodging in the capital of Namibia. It would be wise to spend some time today gathering provisions for your upcoming excursions. After that, take in some sights of Windhoek’s most recognizable attractions. Another option is to spend the remainder of the afternoon in your guesthouse, where you can unwind. For dinner that night, we recommend (at your own cost) one of Windhoek’s many fine dining establishments. The Elegant Guesthouse is where you will be staying.
Day 2: Windhoek – Kalahari
Distance approx. 270 km; driving time approx. 3-4 hours
Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch
You will be led south towards Mariental on your Namibia-Botswana road tour from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Your ultimate destination is the lovely Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch. In the midst of the Kalahari’s characteristic bright red sand dunes, it lies like an oasis. Step foot here, take a deep breath, and marvel at the breathtaking scenery. We suggest a guided nature excursion (not included in the price) during the afternoon. While driving around the reserve in an open safari vehicle, you might see antelopes, giraffes, and zebras. As the sun dips below the horizon, you cautiously begin to descend. Guests at Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch will have the opportunity to spend the night in a savannah cabin.
Day 3: Kalahari – Namib Desert
Distance approx. 300 km; driving time approx. 4-5 hours
The dawn over the Kalahari is very breathtaking, so waking up early today is definitely worth it! View the expansive countryside bathed in the most breathtaking hues as the sun rises from atop one of the dunes. After a hearty breakfast, it’s time to hit the road into the Namib Desert. The Elegant Desert Camp is where you’re going to spend the night after you arrive. When you get to your campsite, jump in the pool and take in the breathtaking scenery. In the afternoon, you have the option to go on a guided nature drive, which is completely optional, and you can see the breathtaking sunsets that this area is known for. The Elegant Desert Camp is where you’ll be spending the night.

Distance approx. 200 km; driving time approx. 3 hours
Sossusvlei Namibia 🇳🇦 Desert Dunes of the Namib
You will never forget the breathtaking sight of the sun rising over the world’s oldest desert and casting a golden light over the surrounding dunes. Because of this, you should be prepared to enter Namib-Naukluft National Park as soon as it opens at dawn. After you’ve checked into the park, make your way to Deadvlei to stand on the white clay pan surrounded by towering dunes and experience the otherworldly ambiance. The desert is home to a variety of animals; on sometimes, you may even see oryx or ostriches roaming about. On this day, don’t forget to visit Sesriem Canyon as well. When the riverbed dries up, you can take a leisurely stroll down into the canyon to cool off from the desert heat. After an unforgettable experience, you head back to your campsite for a hearty meal and some much-needed relaxation. If you would prefer to have an expert guide from your lodge accompany you on today’s excursion, you have the option to arrange a guided day tour. The Elegant Desert Camp will be your second home for the night.

The seaside town of Swakopmund, or “Swakop” as the natives name it, is charming and offers a wide variety of things to do. Quad riding, duneboarding, skydiving, scenic flights, and a “Little Five” desert tour are all on the menu. The alternative is to go kayaking or sailing (all activities optional). Located on a scenic tributary of the Aba Huab, the Malansrus Tented Camp will be your home for the night. After a little rest upon arrival, you will have the opportunity to visit Twyfelfontein, the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Namibia, in the afternoon. You will be amazed by the many rock engravings, some of which are believed to be 2000 years old or older. You may unwind at the end of the day in the comfort of camp while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Day 8: Damaraland – Ugab Valley

Another option is to arrange for a half-day guided tour into Twyfelfontein’s hinterland to look for the elephants that have adapted to life in the desert.
Afternoon travel to the Ugab Valley’s Vingerklip Lodge. Hike the well-marked paths across the interesting terrain and stop by the neighboring Fingerklip, a staggering rock formation that looks like a finger.
Day 9 – 10: Ugab Valley – Etosha National Park
Distance on day 9: approx. 250 km; driving time approx. 3 hours (excl. game drives)
Elephant Attack, Etosha National Park, Namibia
You will go to the world-renowned Etosha National Park after a leisurely breakfast. The Anderson Gate is the entrance to Etosha National Park. Numerous animal species find refuge at Etosha National Park, which is well-known as one of the most prominent wildlife parks in Africa. In addition to a thriving black rhino population, the park is also host to the almost unique black-faced impala and the world’s tiniest antelope, the Damara dik-dik. Visiting the park’s waterholes is a common part of an Etosha safari, where you may observe animals quenching their thirst. Wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, lions, springbok, oryx, and eland herds are among the animals that can be seen here. You will depart the park and arrive at Etosha Safari Lodge, which is conveniently located near the park entrance, following an extended afternoon game drive. You can have your meal and stay the night in a chalet here.
Day 11: Etosha National Park
Distance and driving time; depends on the route chosen on game drive
Any early risers can look forward to a spectacular sunrise above Etosha National Park. Safaris are at their most enjoyable first thing in the morning, when the animals are still basking in the chilly weather. The entire day is devoted to safari activities, and if you’re lucky, you might see leopards or cheetahs on your game drive today. The Etosha Pan, which is the inspiration for the park’s name, is another must-see. Spread out over almost 5,000 km², the Etosha salt pan gives rise to a fantastical and eerie environment. You have the option to halt at the Halali or the Namutoni Rest Camp for lunch later on in the day. You will have left the park through the Von Lindequist Gate by the time the sun goes down. Just 8 miles away from this gate lies Mushara Lodge, where you will be spending the night.
Day 12 – 13: Etosha Area – Kavango Region
Distance on day 12: approx. 590 km; driving time approx. 7 hours
Get a good night’s sleep and fuel up on breakfast before hitting the road. The Zambezi Region, once called the Caprivi Strip, is your destination today after passing through Rundu and Tsumeb. The vast Kavango River, indigenous woodlands, and flooded marshes make up the bulk of this natural area. Keep on your way to the Riverdance Lodge, where you’ll be spending the next two nights. After a long drive, relax at the resort, which is perched on the banks of the Kavango River. On the next day, you can pick from a variety of activities, like going on a river cruise on the Kavango or going on game drives in the Mahango or Buffalo Game Park (unless you arrange a guided trip with the lodge, in which case you’ll need a 4×4 and an experienced driver). On a cultural village visit, you could also meet the native Hambukushu people (all activities are optional). Unwind in the tranquil setting of the Riverdance Lodge and savor the scenic views from the veranda of your bungalow.
Day 14 – 15: Kavango Region – Zambezi Region
Distance on day 14: approx. 270 km; driving time approx. 3-4 hours
A scenic trip awaits you as you head east into the Zambezi Region. Local fishing villages will be your passing places, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some large wildlife. Your lodgings are located close to Mudumu National Park to the north. Relax in peace and quiet while listening for the awe-inspiring cries of African fish eagles from this spot on the Kwando River. The Bwabwata or Mudumu National Parks can be independently explored the next day if you possess proficient 4×4 driving abilities. Another alternative is to make an optional reservation at the lodge for a guided game drive or a boat trip. The Namushasha River Lodge will be your home for the next two nights.
Day 16 – 17: Zambezi Region – Kasane – Chobe National Park
Distance on day 16: approx. 270 km; driving time approx. 4 hours
After a leisurely breakfast, keep driving until you reach the Botswana border. After driving to Kasane, you can return your rental car and be whisked away to your lodging. You are well-positioned to visit the neighboring Chobe National Park thanks to the two daily wildlife activities that are included. Chobe National Park is a great spot to see elephants in Africa because it is home to over forty thousand of them. Although the elephants take center stage, you will find a plethora of other animals and birds in Chobe. Lions, leopards, buffalo, crocodiles, giraffes, and zebras are just some of the animals that can be seen on game drives and cruises along the Chobe River. As the sun goes down over the magnificent Chobe River, unwind at the Chobe Bakwena Lodge, your lodgings, with a refreshing drink in hand.

Botswana’s Okavango Delta – Heaven on Earth
You will be transferred to Kasane Airport after participating in a morning safari adventure, the exact timing of which will depend on your departure time. You might see lions, African wild dogs, antelopes, elephants, and more. Additionally, the Okavango Delta is a haven for avian enthusiasts. You can spend your time in the delta going on boat tours, guided forest hikes, or exploring the area in mokoros, which are dugout canoes.
