A Detailed 10-Day Zimbabwe Safari | Mana Pools, Hwange & Livingstone

Days 1-4: Inspiring Views of the Zambezi River | 3 Nights

You may be in the heart of Mana Pools National Park after a 90-minute flight from Harare’s Robert Gabriel Mugabe Airport to the Mana Pools airstrip. You may reach Nyamatusi Camp, the starting point of your African safari, in about thirty minutes by car from that location. The Nyamatusi seasonal camp offers a prime vantage point over one of Africa’s few unspoiled borders, situated next to the meandering Zambezi River that nourishes the verdant environs. The camp is open from April to November.

Among the many animal species that inhabit the intricate ecosystem of Mana Pools are lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, and wildebeests. The animals at the camp get up to six months of solitude every year during the off season. Untamed animal natures emerge as a result, leading to bizarre, unfiltered interactions. Guided hikes, canoe safaris, and game drives are great ways to see wildlife. Fishing and birdwatching are two activities you may enjoy with less wild animals. An unforgettable experience is the elephant tracking that goes on all throughout the park.

Returning to Mana Pools main airstrip on day 4 will allow you to take a flight to your next destination, Manga Airstrip.

Days 4-7: Observe Elephants from the Comfort of Camp | 3 Nights

The second stop on your African safari, the eco-friendly and award-winning Somalisa Tented Camp, is a half-hour drive from Manga Airstrip.

The 2019 World Travel Awards recognised Somalisa as the top tented safari camp in Zimbabwe. The lodge is located near a watering hole where animals that traverse the plains often drink. The elephants that come back time and time again should be observed. Settle down on the terrace with a refreshing beverage in hand and watch as these docile giants sip in the setting sun.

Take a guided tour of Hwange National Park and experience its many wonders, including nocturnal drives, horseback riding, birdwatching, cultural village visits, and game drives. You are guaranteed to come within striking distance of the big cats in this game park, which is known for its abundance of elephants and buffalo as well as its lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

On the seventh day, leave Zimbabwe behind and head to Zambia, its stunning neighbour. The last leg of your African safari begins with a 45-minute flight from Manga Airstrip to Victoria Falls Airport.

Days 7-10: Track White Rhinos on Foot | 3 Nights

Greetings from Zambia! Thorntree River Lodge, one of the most opulent and modern lodges in the country, is a fifty-minute drive from Victoria Falls Airport. With its serene and beautiful vistas of the Zambezi River as it flows by and its proximity to the popular Victoria Falls (only 30 minutes away), this is the perfect spot to end your unforgettable journey.

While visiting Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, you can partake in a wide variety of African safari activities. You can fill your days with game drives, guided nature walks, kayaking, fishing, white rhino tracking, or learning about local traditions at Simonga Village. Take a moment to relax after an action-packed day on the river with sundowners on Thorntree’s own boat. Return to camp for a night of storytelling by the fire in the sunken boma or on the floating deck with river views. At the Ngwana Club, your children will learn about wildlife in a safe environment, so parents can rest.

Victoria Falls, the park’s namesake, is an essential part of any trip to Mosi-oa-Tunya (literally “The Smoke That Thunders”). Some of the things you can do include going on guided rainforest treks, bungee leaping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, and helicopter flips over the falls.

After a brief 20-minute trip on Day 10, you will depart from Thorntree and arrive at Livingstone’s Harry Mwanga Nkumbula Airport. The memories and experiences you make on safari will make sure that Africa stays with you long after you leave the continent.
