A Complete Chobe/Okavango Delta/Moremi, 7 Days Botswana Itinerary

Days 1-2: Cruising on the Chobe River | 2 Nights Chobe National Park, Botswana

BEST SAFARI in BOTSWANA (Chobe National Park)

After you touch down at Kasane International Airport, your guide will be waiting to take you on the scenic drive to Chobe Chilwero. This stunning lodge has won numerous international tourism awards and boasts breathtaking views of the Chobe River floodplains. After a restful night’s sleep, make your way back to the lodge for high tea with your guide.

Observing the river’s and its banks’ abundant wildlife from a specially designed game viewing boat is an exhilarating experience. From May through October, when the rains subside, Chobe is home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. A safari boat provides an ideal vantage position from which to observe the elephants’ antics as they play along the riverbank.

Seeing these massive animals revel in the refreshing water in the warm light of late afternoon is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. While their mothers keep an eye on their tiny calves as they play in the shallows, the older bulls stand silently by the water’s edge, slurping dry trunkfuls of grass. When a herd crosses a river, sometimes only their trunks are visible above water in the deeper parts. Great pods of hippos snort and grumble in the water as crocodiles unblinkingly bask in the dying warmth of day, as scattered as stones along the riverbank.

Days 3-4: Walking with Okavango Elephants | 2 Nights Okavango Delta, Botswana

You can reach the Okavango Delta wetlands—a mesmerizing mix of wooded islands, grassy floodplains, winding waterways, and papyrus beds—by mid-morning by taking a flight south over the Chobe’s expansive dry plains. Nestled in lush riverine woodland, the magnificent Baines Camp is your home in the delta. This luxurious camp has only five suites, making it both intimate and unique, with breathtaking amenities. Your private veranda is home to a star bath and sky bed; in the shade of the tall trees, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the delta during the day and the night sky loaded with shooting stars.

Discover the great outdoors on a canoe modelled after the ancient mekoro utilized by indigenous peoples. The tight canals are best navigated by this ship, which also provides a unique vantage point from which to explore the mystical terrain. As you float silently across the rivers, birdsong fills the air, and you see and hear a plethora of natural beauties, such as kingfishers swooping in a flurry of color, small frogs that resemble jewels clinging to stalks of lilies, and herds of red lechwe antelope feeding in shallow flooded fields.

Days 5-6: The Magical Moremi

Camp Moremi | Moremi Game Reserve

Take a plane to Moremi Game Reserve’s Chief’s Island after your last morning activity at Baines. As soon as you touch down on Chief’s Island, the biggest island in the Okavango Delta, you’ll start to see why this place is famous for its abundance of wildlife. In the vast meadows, you may see antelope munching on their grass and giraffes staring attentively over acacia trees. The woodlands are a great spot to spot predators because of the abundance of game, which makes the black-and-green Cape buffalo stand out and the whistling alarm call of the zebras fill the air.

You can just feel the peace and quiet as you pull up to Chief’s Camp. Amidst a canopy of majestic trees and with a view of a vast floodplain, this small camp exudes a delightful ambiance. A chic living room with a bar, dining area, and trendy furnishings opens out to a private pool deck, and a peaceful small trail leads to the spa. Take some time to relax in your accommodation and take in the scenery from your balcony before getting ready for your afternoon game drive with your guide.

The variety of habitats here is striking; the landscape shifts from woodland to grassland to marshes seemingly every few minutes. With prides of twenty or more people, Chief’s Island is a top predator location, and your guide will keep a watch out for lion footprints.

Your guide will find a beautiful area for you to relax and sip a refreshing gin and tonic as the sun sets. After your adventure, you may return to camp and share your stories over supper on the terrace, all the while listening to the roar of the lions in the background.

Day 7: Farewell to Africa

Return home on a picturesque aircraft to Maun after a morning drive and a relaxed brunch. Exploring the wilderness, witnessing a lion hunt, and sunset over the Chobe River with a hundred elephants at the water’s edge are all experiences that come to mind when soaring over the perfect wetlands of the Okavango Delta. These kinds of recollections make the breathtaking, unspoiled landscapes of northern Botswana feel like home.
