Mapazi Camp Nestled on the Banks of Luangwe River

The “Mapazi” tented bush camp is the sole location from which Surefoot Safaris conduct business. Mapazi offers a genuine camping experience with some basic amenities, set among old trees on the Luangwa Riverbanks.

An open-sided tent has been painstakingly erected around the massive boughs of a magnificent Sausage Tree to provide a refreshing bar and cozy lounge space, which serves as the centerpiece of Mapazi. It is called Chitenje.

Three Meru-style walk-in tents, each with a river view, make up The Tents – Mapazi. You can enter the tents from either end, which lets you enjoy the breeze. Each tent features a covered porch with chairs and expansive gauze panels that provide a view in every direction. Our spacious beds include spring mattresses and plush pillows, guaranteeing a restful night’s sleep. There is a separate restroom in each tent that has a sink with both hot and cold running water, a toilet, and a shower. These have a view of the river and are located near to the tents.

Indulge in a leisurely breakfast and a cup of coffee while watching the sun rise from the banks of the Luangwa River. Under the shady canopy of a sausage tree, we enjoy our brunch or early lunch. Before setting out on their afternoon stroll, everyone gathers at the Chitenje for tea. While camping or lounging on the Luangwa Riverbanks under the moonlight, we enjoy our meals in the Chitenje.

For your protection, a trained armed escort scout from the US Department of Parks and Wildlife will be present on every hike. We always have first aid supplies with us, whether we’re traveling by car or foot, and we stay in touch with camp through shortwave radio. An extensive medical first aid package is available at the camp, and several of the top staff members hold first aid certifications.

Guests at Mapazi have the chance to fully immerse themselves in nature during their stay, thanks to our Wi-Fi and cell reception. This campsite does not have any cell service or Wi-Fi.
