Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary Facts, Reviews, Day Trips
In 1999, the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was formally inaugurated. The goal of the organization’s founding trustees was to create a well-known organization that would address both the urgent need to save chimpanzees and the mounting challenges facing them in the wild. Ngamba is now regarded as one of the best primate sanctuaries in Africa and one of the most effective conservation groups in Uganda.
It will have been 25 years since the sanctuary first opened its doors in 2023. Many chimpanzees, some born in the refuge, have found a home on Ngamba Island during the past quarter of a century. There are currently fifty-three chimpanzees living in the sanctuary.
In honor of the chimpanzee and its natural habitats, we are celebrating their 25th anniversary with the hope of drawing more attention to the need to protect these species. “Partnerships for co-existence” is the rallying cry for all living things, both human and non-human, to coexist peacefully in the world we all inhabit. Dr. Jane Goodall, ethologist, UN peace ambassador, and project coordinator for the sanctuary’s creation in Uganda, will attend the festivities as the institute’s namesake. Goodall is well-known around the world.
Under the joyful theme of “25 for 25 years,” we have started a one-of-a-kind fundraising campaign to honor this extraordinary 25-year journey and lay the groundwork for the next quarter-century. Donations in increments of 25 will help us reach our $250,000 goal, which will represent the remarkable accomplishments we have achieved and the future impact we can create as a team.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary Facts
It was established so that orphaned chimpanzees might live together in an environment that is close to nature. More than 45 chimpanzees now reside on the island; all of them were taken away by the law and sent to the sanctuary for treatment and rehabilitation.
You can contribute to this deserving cause by going to see these semi-wild chimpanzees because a portion of the admission price goes straight to the endeavor. Take a tour of the sanctuary with a guide and see the chimpanzees enter their camp for a morning or afternoon meal.

At Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, 52 chimpanzees, some of which have been orphaned or rescued, call the tranquil waters of Lake Victoria their home. The nonprofit organization known as Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (Chimpanzee Trust) oversees the sanctuary’s operations. We collaborate closely with the Ugandan government and wildlife authorities, and we are deeply dedicated to field conservation and community education. You can spend the night at Ngamba Ecolodge and go on a half-day or full-day trip to the sanctuary to see these amazing giant apes in their natural habitat.
