Taking a Batwa experience in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a cultural experience like no other. The Batwa pygmies are one of the smallest tribes with a very authentic and a very unique past. They lived within the forest alongside the Mountain Gorillas before they were pushed out for Mountain Gorilla conservation efforts. Today, they take tourists through the forest in what is referred to as the Batwa trail to show how they lived in the forest back in the day.

Detailed itinerary: 4 Days in Mgahinga

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala by 4×4 safari vehicle to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

On the first day of your safari, have an early morning breakfast at about 6:00 am and get ready for pick up from your safari guide allocated by Kabira Gorilla safaris. Following the meeting and greeting, you will embark on the drive-by road to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

From when you set off, you will have your first stop after about 80 Km from Kampala at the equator line. Here you have a few experiments and take photos at the world’s center line.  You then continue with the drive to southwestern Uganda and have lunch en route. After lunch, the drive continues to Mgahinga with arrival in the evening. On arrival, you check in, have dinner and spend the night at a preferred accommodation facility. It can be budget, mid-range, or Luxury according to your preference.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park


Mountain Gorilla Trekking | Uganda | Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Be ready to get ready early, have breakfast, and then be transferred from the hotel to the park headquarters for a briefing on trekking guidelines. By 8:00 am the park rangers will take you through the dos and don’ts of mountain Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. 

After the briefing, you go for Gorilla trekking, a wonderful experience as you walk through the forest inhabited by Mountain Gorillas. The trek takes several hours of time that can’t be predicted with about 2 – 6 hours or more and a maximum of 1 hour in the presence of the Mountain Gorillas. You spend this time taking pictures and filming the Gorilla lifestyle.

After seeing the Gorillas and spending 1 hour with them, you then walk back to the park headquarters. This is where you are awarded a certificate for completing the trek. From there your driver ensures your transfer to the hotel for relaxation and dinner. 

You spend the night in the previous night’s hotel.

Day 3: Mgahinga Batwa trail Experience


The Batwa Trail, Mgahinga, Uganda

One of the most fascinating things about visiting Africa is the people, there is a lot of diversity. The Batwa people are amazing with a very unique culture that is just getting tempered by modernization. 

The Batwa trail experience starts after your breakfast at the hotel, depending on the allocated time. It starts with a Batwa guide typically dressed in traditional wear kneeling down to their god known as Biheeko who is believed to have powers or life protection and death when they go for hunting, fruit gathering, and raiding. 

During a Mgahinga Batwa trail, the local Batwa guide will show off their hunting techniques, and how to use different plants to make handcrafts like bamboo cups. You will also be taken through the former home of the Batwa king known as Nagarama cave where you listen to women perform their traditional music and also learn from the Batwa culture.

After the Batwa trail experience, you then return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation through the evening. You then spend the night at your previous accommodation.

Day 4: Return from Mgahinga to Kampala / Entebbe International Airport by road

On the last day of your trekking safari in Mgahinga, you have breakfast and embark on the 8-9 hours drive back to Kampala. You have lunch en route.
