Day 3: Early Morning Hiking of Mt. Sabinyo
You will begin your ascent of Mount Sabinyo today, a Virunga Volcano whose summit is only reachable from the park. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Uganda all share a border that intersects at the mountain’s top, which is located at 3,645 meters (11,959 feet) above sea level. The extremely endangered mountain gorillas live on the slopes of Mount Sabinyo.
You will notice how the slopes of Sabinyo have a rough landscape with numerous craters and steep ridges. Depending on the pace and weather, the trek up Mount Sabinyo takes 4 hours to reach the peak and 4 hours to return. While the porters are available for hire, walking sticks are offered free of charge. Between 2400 and 2800 meters, you will pass through bamboo-zone vegetation areas. Take a nap and your packed lunch after ascending to the park. Start the mountain’s ascent. After dinner, spend the night at the inn.
