Observe chimps and gorillas with a primatologist in the jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Volcanoes National Park. Stay at breathtaking lodges, ranging from a lakeside house at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains to a hilltop eco-lodge with panoramic views of Rwanda’s volcanoes.

Day 1 – 2: Entebbe, Uganda or Ngamba Island

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and make your way to our hotel. The following day, go to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Ngamba Island, which was created in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute as a home for rescued and orphaned chimps. Explore the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre later.

Day 3 – 4: Kibale Forest National Park


Chimps trekking in KIBALE NATIONAL PARK

Fly from Entebbe to Kasese on your way to Kibale National Park, where you will check into our resort on a crater lake. Meet with Emily Otali, Field Director of the Kibale Chimpanzee Project, and learn about the many conservation and education programs that National Geographic supports. Look for chimps in the park, and other primates in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, such as black-and-white colobus, red-tailed, and blue monkeys, and the uncommon l’Hoest’s monkey.

Day 5 – 6: Kibale Forest National Park / Queen Elizabeth National Park

Spend the next morning tracking chimps. Continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you can go on a safari in search of elephants, lions, and Ugandan kobs before an afternoon wildlife cruise.

Day 7 – 8: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park


Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda/Uganda

Visit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The following morning, venture into the park’s forests, which are home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Sit among these gentle giants and get a close look at one of the planet’s most endangered species.

Day 9 – 10: Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Cross the border into Rwanda and settle into your private villa with views of the surrounding volcanoes and lakes. Learn about continuing conservation efforts from experts at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Karisoke Research Center. Spend the next day pursuing mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, where Dian Fossey did gorilla study for 18 years. This evening, take in a traditional dancing performance.

Day 11: Volcanoes National Park, Kigali

This morning, join wildlife biologist and National Geographic grantee Deogratias Tuyisingize in the quest for endangered golden monkeys in the park. Transfer to Kigali International Airport (KGL) for your journey home after lunch.
