Worst/Best Time to Visit Zambia | A Month by Month Guide
The Worst/best time to visit Zambia is during the dry season from June to November, offering optimal wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. For the most comfortable temperatures, visit between June and August, while September and October offer peak game viewing, despite high heat. Victoria Falls is best seen from February to May.
The months of June through November, which make up the dry season, are ideal for a trip to Zambia. The days are hot and the nights are cold; the skies are cobalt blue. Across the country, temperatures might range from 23°C to 36°C. During this season, there are also plenty of chances to see wildlife.
Even though the camps are temporarily closed in January and February for the wet season, Victoria Falls is still a fantastic standalone attraction that can be enjoyed on a safari. The moniker “smoke that thunders” is justified in this situation. The Kalolo-Lozi people came up with the term because they were able to observe the massive spray and mist clouds from afar.
Even if it rains outside of the wettest months, the mild weather, few visitors, and excellent birdwatching more than make up for it.
Key Seasonal Considerations:
Best Time for Safari (Dry Season – June to October/November): Game viewing is excellent, with sparse vegetation and easily accessible, dry roads. June–August is cooler, while Sept–Oct is very hot but features large concentrations of wildlife and nesting carmine bee-eaters.
- Best Time for Victoria Falls (March to May): The falls are at their maximum, full flow following the rainy season.
- Best Time for Birding (Emerald Season – November to March): The landscape is lush and green, attracting migratory birds. Note that many safari camps close, and some roads become impassable.
- Best Shoulder Season (April/May): The rains have stopped, creating a lush green landscape that is drying out, with good visibility and comfortable temperatures.
Activity Highlights:
- Walking Safaris: Best from June onwards in North and South Luangwa.
- White-water Rafting/Devil’s Pool: Best when water levels are lower, typically from July to January.
- Bat Migration (Kasanka National Park): November.
Visiting from June to November provides the classic, dry safari experience, while travelling in the “Emerald Season” (Dec-April) offers a, lush, and, for birders, more rewarding experience, albeit with more logistical challenges.
